Chimney repair and liners in Trenton
Four in ten Trenton homes are row houses or twins. We repair and reline their chimneys, starting with a free inspection.
Trenton has been New Jersey's capital since 1790 and was a manufacturing city for most of the century after, under the slogan Trenton Makes, The World Takes. Its housing still reflects that history, block after block: 43.4 percent of Trenton's homes are attached single-family houses, row homes and twins, and only 16 percent are detached. About 38 percent were built before 1940, more than twice the state share of 17.4 percent, and the median home dates from 1953.
In a row of houses, chimneys sit on party walls and often share a stack with the neighbors. Most no longer serve fireplaces. They vent gas boilers, furnaces and water heaters, which heat about 64 percent of Trenton homes, while about a quarter use electricity. When those flues crack, leak or the appliance is replaced, the chimney needs attention. We inspect it for free, take photos and give you a written price before any work.
Row houses and shared chimneys
On a row house the chimney is usually short, sits on a flat or low roof and is shared with the house next door. Water gets in through a cracked crown or failed flashing on the roof, and it can show up in your wall or your neighbor's. Inside, old clay tile or unlined flues let moisture from gas exhaust soak the brick. New Jersey's fire code says an unlined chimney with open mortar joints shall be repaired or relined.
When a furnace, boiler or water heater is replaced, New Jersey requires a chimney verification on form F-370 before the job is approved, and the owner can't sign it. A liner sized to the new water heater or furnace typically costs $625 to $2,250. Crown work runs $600 to $2,200 and flashing $300 to $1,800. Landlords with several units can book the checks together.
Mill Hill, Berkeley Square and the Landmarks Commission
Trenton's Landmarks Commission has designated 58 local landmarks, including eight historic districts, and reviews all exterior improvements to designated properties. Mill Hill's neighborhood society advises that an application go in before any exterior work starts, even work that wouldn't need a building permit. Roof jobs come before the commission regularly. Its February 2026 agenda included a roof replacement on Jackson Street in Mill Hill and porch work in Berkeley Square.
If your house is in a Trenton historic district, plan for that review before chimney work that changes how it looks, and expect brick and mortar to be matched. We can provide photos and a written scope for your application.

FAQ
Trenton chimney questions
Water is coming into my row house wall near the chimney. Is it mine or my neighbor's?
It can be either. Shared chimneys and flat roofs make it hard to tell from inside. We check the crown, flashing and roof joint from above and show you photos of where the water gets in. Leak repairs typically run $300 to $2,500.
The city inspector needs a chimney form for my new water heater. Can you do it?
Yes. That's New Jersey form F-370, which a professional completes after checking that the flue is clean, sound and sized for the new appliance. If it needs a liner, the liner paperwork goes in with the permit.
Do I need Landmarks Commission approval in Mill Hill?
For exterior work on a designated property, yes. Trenton's Landmarks Commission reviews all exterior improvements in its historic districts, and the Mill Hill society advises applying before work starts. We can supply photos and a written scope.
